Tanzania Partners With Didier Drogba to Promote AFCON 2027

Date:

Football legend Didier Drogba has officially agreed to collaborate with Tanzania as a special ambassador for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking a major boost for East Africa’s preparations for the historic tournament.

The former Ivory Coast captain reached the agreement following a high-level meeting with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the State House in Dodoma on May 5, 2026.

Tanzania is set to co-host the 2027 AFCON tournament alongside Kenya and Uganda under the “Pamoja AFCON” banner, which symbolizes unity and regional cooperation among the three East African nations.

Under the new partnership, Drogba will help market and promote the continental football tournament globally while also supporting youth football development initiatives in Tanzania.

According to Tanzanian officials, Drogba’s role will include using his international profile and influence to raise the visibility of AFCON 2027 and position Tanzania as a key destination for sports tourism and investment.

The collaboration is also expected to extend beyond football marketing, with President Samia directing Tanzania’s Ministry of Sports to work closely with Drogba on the establishment and management of football academies across the country.

The move is aimed at strengthening grassroots football structures and nurturing young talent using the expertise and international experience of one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers.

Speaking after the meeting, Drogba expressed excitement about the partnership and praised Tanzania’s vision for sports development ahead of the continental tournament.

The former Chelsea F.C. striker emphasized the importance of investing in young people through sports, saying football can become a powerful tool for discipline, education and social transformation.

He also encouraged young Tanzanians to balance academics with sports development, noting that football careers should be built alongside education and personal growth.

Officials hope Drogba’s involvement will help strengthen international interest in Tanzania by linking the excitement of the tournament with the country’s globally recognized tourism attractions, including Serengeti National Park and Zanzibar.

Tanzania has already intensified preparations for the tournament, with several infrastructure projects underway as the country positions itself to host matches during the month-long football spectacle.

Among the key projects is the construction of a new 30,000-seater stadium in Arusha as well as another major stadium development in Dodoma.

Authorities are also continuing upgrades to existing sporting facilities as East Africa prepares to host the prestigious continental tournament for the first time in history.

The 2027 AFCON is expected to become one of the biggest sporting events ever staged in the region, bringing together fans, teams, investors and tourists from across Africa and beyond.

Sports analysts believe Drogba’s involvement adds significant international credibility and star power to Tanzania’s preparations, especially given his influence as one of Africa’s most recognizable football icons.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest African footballers of all time, Drogba enjoyed a successful career in Europe and internationally, winning multiple trophies and becoming a global ambassador for African football.

Beyond his achievements on the pitch, Drogba has also earned praise for humanitarian work and peace-building efforts in Ivory Coast, making him one of the continent’s most respected sporting figures.
