MARTI, Kenya — A 17-year-old herder was shot dead while three others sustained injuries in a cattle raid on Monday evening in Marti area, police have confirmed.
Authorities said the raiders escaped with an unspecified number of livestock, prompting a multi-agency pursuit that continued into Wednesday amid reports that the attackers had crossed into their hideouts.
The injured herders were rushed to a nearby hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
Cattle rustling remains a persistent threat in Samburu, where teenage herders are often targeted despite ongoing campaigns to encourage them to attend school.
This latest attack comes amid intensified security operations under Operation Maliza Uhalifu, which aims to curb banditry across Samburu, Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Marsabit, Meru, and Isiolo counties.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the government’s long-term strategy combines security, community empowerment, and sustainable development.
“We are coming to dismantle not only the criminals themselves but also the entire chain that fuels the cattle rustling industry,” he said.
Murkomen announced fresh vetting for all National Police Reservists (NPRs) and a policy shift placing them under the direct command of local Officer Commanding Police Stations (OCS) to strengthen operational effectiveness.
The government also plans to support residents with subsidised agricultural inputs and extension services to boost legitimate livelihoods and reduce dependence on livestock raiding.
Officials noted that while retributive attacks remain a risk, the operations have helped contain crime and disrupt the flow of stolen animals to urban markets where they are often slaughtered and sold.
