CARACAS, Venezuela — The death toll from Venezuela’s devastating twin earthquakes has risen to 5,208, authorities have confirmed, nearly a month after the powerful back-to-back tremors struck the South American nation.
An updated official tally released on Sunday showed that the number of fatalities had increased by 89 since Saturday, underscoring the continued recovery of victims from collapsed buildings and debris.
The twin earthquakes struck on June 24, with the coastal state of La Guaira, located near the capital Caracas, bearing the brunt of the destruction.
According to National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez, the number of people injured remains unchanged at 16,740.
Authorities have not disclosed how many people remain missing, raising fears that the death toll could increase further as search operations continue.

Official figures indicate that nearly 20,000 people who lost their homes are living in temporary camps established in stadiums, public squares and along sidewalks while awaiting longer-term shelter.
