NAIROBI, Kenya- Sony is about to make waves in the gaming world once again. The tech giant announced that the PlayStation 5 Pro, an enhanced version of its flagship console, will hit stores on November 7, 2024.
Boasting improved graphics and AI capabilities, the PS5 Pro promises a next-level gaming experience for fans ready to take the plunge—if they’re willing to shell out a bit more.
“Simply put, it’s the most powerful console we’ve ever built,” said Mark Cerny, PlayStation’s lead architect, in a recent video announcement. And with a price tag of Ksh.90,400, it’s also one of the most expensive.
This upgraded model is designed for gamers looking to push the limits. With an upgraded graphics processing unit (GPU) and improved AI integration, the Pro version delivers a smoother, more immersive experience—perfect for gamers who crave top-tier performance.
However, it comes at a cost. Retailing for 40pc more than the base PS5, the Pro lacks a disc drive but packs a serious punch in terms of processing power.
While the Pro version may appeal to hardcore gamers, some analysts, like Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners, believe its appeal may remain limited.
Drawing from history, Ahmad pointed out that the PlayStation 4 Pro, launched in 2016, didn’t significantly boost sales because it catered to a niche audience.
He argues that lowering the price of the base PS5 or releasing highly anticipated games like GTA 6 will likely have a bigger impact on sales.
Sony’s gaming division has faced challenges recently. While gaming surged during the COVID-19 lockdowns, that momentum hasn’t been easy to maintain.
Earlier this year, Sony cut 900 jobs—around 8pc of its workforce—as it missed sales targets for the PS5. The company now expects to sell 18 million PS5 units this fiscal year, a drop from 20.8 million the previous year.
The question now is whether the PS5 Pro can help turn the tide for Sony. The company is betting big on the Pro version to reinvigorate sales, but analysts remain skeptical about whether a premium, high-priced console will appeal to the broader market.
For those eager to grab one, mark your calendars for November 7. And for gamers just waiting on “Grand Theft Auto VI”, it seems the base PS5 might still be your best bet.
