NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a mixed bag of weather alerts for the week ahead, warning of unrelenting rains in some regions, biting cold nights in highland areas, and scorching daytime temperatures elsewhere.
In a forecast covering the period from June 10 to 16, the department said several counties will continue to grapple with wet and chilly conditions, even as others brace for intense heat and gusty winds.
Regions expected to receive persistent rainfall include the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and the Coast.
Above-normal rainfall is also projected in parts of the Central and Southern Rift Valley, Nyandarua in the east, as well as Turkana and Samburu in the northwestern belt.
“Rainfall in these areas is likely to exceed the long-term average for June,” the department said, raising concerns over potential flooding and localized disruptions.
Conversely, most of the Southeastern Lowlands are forecast to remain largely dry, with only brief cloudy spells breaking the sunshine.
But while the skies stay clear by day, temperatures are expected to plunge at night—particularly in the Central Highlands, areas around Mt Kilimanjaro, and the Central Rift Valley.
Night-time lows in some of these regions could fall below 10°C, prompting a public advisory for residents—especially children, the elderly, and the sick—to stay warm.
Meanwhile, soaring daytime temperatures above 30°C are set to dominate the Coast, North Eastern, and parts of Northwestern Kenya.
The Kenya Met Department warned the rising heat could intensify drought conditions in arid and semi-arid regions, placing additional strain on already scarce water and pasture resources.
Adding to the hazards, strong winds exceeding 25 knots (nearly 13 m/s) are expected to sweep through coastal and inland areas, particularly in the Southeastern Lowlands, North Eastern, and parts of the Rift Valley.
The department cautioned that these winds could disrupt marine operations and damage weak structures.
As the cool season gradually sets in, Kenyans are being urged to remain vigilant, stay updated with daily forecasts, and follow weather advisories.
