NAIROBI, Kenya- Nairobi streets are engulfed in white smoke from teargas canisters as police engage in running battles with protestors opposing the Financial Bill 2024.
Despite the heavy police presence, the protests are predominantly peaceful, with no reports of violence or weapons among the demonstrators, according to Y News monitors.
Today’s demonstration, like Tuesday’s, is led by members of Gen Z.
As parliament debates the controversial bill, these young protestors have managed to evade police and make their way into the city center.
“Their resilience and determination are clear, as they continue to stand firm against the proposed legislation,” a city resident observed.
The Financial Bill 2024 has sparked significant controversy, with protestors arguing it imposes unfair burdens on already struggling Kenyans.
The demonstrators, predominantly young people, are demanding a more just and equitable approach to economic policy.
The heavy police presence across major highways and in the CBD has not deterred the protestors.
Despite the use of teargas and aggressive dispersal tactics, the protestors have remained peaceful and organized.
Their message is clear: they are calling for change and accountability from their leaders.
Similar protests are happening across the country, including in Eldoret, the home county of President William Ruto.
In Eldoret town, hundreds of protestors brought down a wheelbarrow they erected in celebration of the President’s victory two years ago.
