Govt Announces Six Security Measures Ahead of Christmas Season

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The government has unveiled six comprehensive security measures aimed at ensuring a peaceful and orderly festive season, citing increased travel, tourism, and social activity during the Christmas and New Year period.

In a statement released on Wednesday, authorities said the overall security situation remains calm, but past trends indicate a heightened risk of isolated criminal incidents, traffic violations, and opportunistic crime during the holidays.

At the centre of the plan is the activation of the National Multi-Agency Command Centre (NMACC), which will coordinate surveillance, intelligence sharing, and rapid response throughout the festive period.

The centre brings together officers from the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, National Intelligence Service, Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forestry Service, National Youth Service, and National Government Administration.

Similar command centres have also been activated at regional and county levels to enhance operational control.

Security coverage has been intensified nationwide, with officers deployed at airports, border points, shopping malls, hotels, beaches, tourist sites, places of worship, entertainment venues, central business districts, and critical infrastructure installations. All officers previously on leave have been recalled to duty.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), working with the Traffic Police Department, has launched a nationwide traffic operation focusing on high-risk corridors, with mobile courts, electronic enforcement, and joint multi-agency patrols deployed to enhance road safety.

Regional and County Security Committees have also reinforced counter-terrorism preparedness, implementing Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (P/CVE) County Action Plans, particularly around large public gatherings and critical installations.

In addition, security teams have escalated operations against organised criminal gangs and cultural and social crimes, including defilement, early pregnancies, forced marriages, domestic violence, female genital mutilation, and religious extremism.

The government called on Kenyans to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies, stressing that public safety is a shared responsibility.
