NAIROBI, Kenya- The General Service Unit (GSU) has intensified preparations ahead of the June 25 Gen Z demonstrations commemoration, with commanders being directed to uphold professionalism and maintain law and order during the planned events.
GSU Commandant Johana Kiplangat Tonui on Tuesday convened a meeting of commanders and senior officers, where he outlined the unit’s operational expectations ahead of the anniversary demonstrations.
According to a statement from the Kenya Police Service, Tonui urged officers to remain vigilant and ensure security within their respective areas of responsibility as the country prepares for the commemorations.
The Commandant emphasized the need for officers to operate within the law while carrying out their duties, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains a key priority.
He directed commanders to maintain high standards of professionalism and work collectively in executing their mandate during the planned demonstrations.
Tonui also assured officers of continued support from Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service Eliud Lagat, and the GSU leadership.
The briefing comes amid heightened security preparations across the country ahead of demonstrations planned to mark the first anniversary of the June 25, 2024 Gen Z protests, which saw thousands of young Kenyans take to the streets in opposition to the Finance Bill.
Security agencies have repeatedly stated that they will facilitate peaceful demonstrations while taking action against any acts of violence, destruction of property or criminal activity.
The meeting brought together senior GSU leadership, who reaffirmed the elite unit’s commitment to serving the nation with discipline, dedication and responsibility.
The police service has in recent days intensified coordination efforts and issued public assurances regarding security arrangements as civil society groups, activists and protest organizers prepare for the commemorative events scheduled across various parts of the country.
Authorities have urged demonstrators to remain peaceful and comply with the law, while human rights groups have called on security agencies to exercise restraint and respect constitutional rights during the commemorations.
