NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya has officially launched its campaign for Raila Odinga’s candidature for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, seeking support from member states of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi tabled the proposal during the 18th Ordinary Session of the ICGLR Inter-Ministerial Committee held in Luanda, Angola, on Sunday.
Presenting Odinga’s bid, Mudavadi emphasized the former Prime Minister’s decades-long contributions to Africa’s development, unity, and governance.
From his tenure as the African Union’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa to his mediation in regional political disputes, Odinga’s resume speaks volumes.
“Kenya has put forward Raila Odinga’s candidature for the AUC Chairperson election, set for February 2025,” Mudavadi announced.
He described Odinga as a respected Pan-Africanist who has consistently championed regional integration and economic transformation.
The ICGLR members, led by Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, acknowledged Odinga’s credentials and pledged their support.
As the only candidate from the ICGLR region, Odinga is up against contenders from Djibouti, Mauritius, and Madagascar, making Kenya’s lobbying efforts critical in the months ahead.
Mudavadi highlighted Odinga’s vision for a prosperous Africa centered on economic transformation, financial independence, and gender equality.
Kenya’s campaign strategy includes positioning Odinga as a leader capable of enhancing intra-African trade, addressing pressing continental challenges, and driving unity among member states.
With less than three months to the vote, Kenya is intensifying diplomatic efforts, rallying nations to back Odinga.
Mudavadi noted that Odinga embodies Kenya’s values and aspirations for the continent, vowing to lead the African Union with transparency, innovation, and dedication.
As the February 2025 elections approach, Kenya is under pressure to solidify its alliances and secure votes for Odinga.
The AUC Chairperson role, currently held by Moussa Faki Mahamat of Chad, will be vacant after Mahamat completes his second term.
Mudavadi reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to ensuring Odinga’s leadership ushers in a new era for the African Union.
“We believe Odinga’s expertise and dedication will advance the collective aspirations of a united, peaceful, and prosperous Africa,” he stated, urging ICGLR members to support the bid.
With the African Union Commission elections fast approaching, Raila Odinga’s candidature represents Kenya’s hope for continental leadership that prioritizes economic growth, integration, and equality.
