KAMPALA, Uganda – Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has held a crucial meeting with senior military officials from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to discuss the ongoing security operations in the region.
The talks, which took place at the Special Forces Command (SFC) Headquarters on Tuesday, focused on the success of Operation Shujaa, a joint military operation between the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the DRC Armed Forces (FARDC).
Gen. Kainerugaba was joined by Maj Gen Nyembo Abdallah, the Ituri sector commander, and Maj Gen Mandevu Bruno, the North Kivu sector commander of FARDC, alongside other senior DRC military officials.
The discussions primarily centered on the progress of Operation Shujaa, a concerted effort targeting the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorists operating in eastern DRC.
The ADF, known for its brutal attacks in the region, has been a major security threat in the DRC’s eastern provinces.
In his address to the DRC military delegation, Gen. Kainerugaba expressed appreciation for the cooperation shown by FARDC forces, highlighting the camaraderie and teamwork that have been integral to the operation’s success.
He emphasized Uganda’s unwavering commitment to continued collaboration with the DRC, stressing that mutual cooperation between the two nations would be vital in ensuring lasting peace and security in the region.
According to Gen. Kainerugaba Operation Shujaa has demonstrated the strength of our partnership and the power of regional cooperation.
Since its inception, Operation Shujaa has received widespread praise for its role in stabilizing the volatile eastern DRC region.

Uganda’s military leadership has maintained that while the ADF has been substantially weakened, the remnants of the group continue to operate in the dense jungles, requiring sustained military and diplomatic efforts to fully neutralize the threat.
The meeting between Gen. Kainerugaba and the FARDC generals also reflects Uganda’s broader diplomatic and military efforts to stabilize the region.
This engagement follows Gen. Kainerugaba’s recent talks with CODECO political leaders and rebel groups, underscoring Uganda’s multi-faceted approach to resolving conflict and promoting peace in the region.
The presence of Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, Commander of Uganda’s Land Forces, and other senior UPDF officials further underscored the high-level nature of the discussions.
As the security situation in the region remains fragile, the importance of continued military collaboration between Uganda and the DRC was a central theme of the talks.
In his remarks, Gen. Kainerugaba also reaffirmed Uganda’s stance on the importance of regional security and its willingness to support future joint operations that would further secure the region from terrorism and insurgency.
