NAIROBI, Kenya- Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has issued a stern call for an immediate halt to abductions and enforced disappearances, a crisis he believes is sowing fear and tarnishing Kenya’s global image.
Speaking in Homa Bay County on Friday during the Genowa Governor’s Cup, where he appeared alongside President William Ruto, Raila emphasized the need for decisive action to restore safety and security as the new year approaches.
Raila’s said such acts of injustice have no place in the coming year. He appealed for a fresh start, free from the shadow of violence and fear.
“Sasa tunaingia mwaka mpya. Tunataka mabaya yote yaishe na mwaka huu ambao tunazika. Hatutaki kuona dhambi ikivuka kuingia mwaka mpya,” he said passionately, urging for a secure environment where young Kenyans can thrive without fear of being abducted or harmed.
This call for action underscores his broader concerns about national security. Raila disclosed that he had already discussed the matter with President Ruto, expressing hope that the government would intervene to prevent further escalation.
Raila demanded stringent action against those orchestrating these abductions, framing their acts as a direct threat to Kenya’s national security.
“Nimeambia Rafiki yangu Rais William Ruto mambo ya vijana kushikwa ovyo ovyo na kupigwa pingu, na kuwekwa mahali na kuteswa ikome kabisa,” Raila remarked.
In a refreshing pivot, Raila addressed the issue of online criticism, acknowledging the heated political discourse dominating Kenya’s social media.
Despite being a frequent target of harsh remarks, he maintained a magnanimous stance, advocating for unity and understanding.
“Hata kama wewe unapinga mimi, wewe si adui wangu. Hata ukinitusi, wewe si adui. Mimi nimetusiwa sana katika mitandao ya kijamii, lakini ninacheka na kusema huyo ni mpumbavu,” Raila stated with a mix of humor and resolve.
His remarks serve as a reminder that healthy political discourse is integral to Kenya’s growth. Raila’s vision is rooted in fostering peace and progress, ensuring the nation moves forward together.
