Uhuru Kenyatta Mourns Volleyball Icon Janet Wanja:” A Symbol of Strength”

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya is mourning the loss of a sports legend, Janet Wanja, who passed away Friday morning after a battle with stage-four gallbladder cancer.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta joined the nation in paying tribute to the volleyball icon, hailing her as an inspiration to countless athletes and a beacon of excellence on and off the court.

Celebrating a Legacy of Dedication and Talent

Wanja’s career was nothing short of extraordinary. As a longtime setter for the national women’s volleyball team, the Malkia Strikers, she represented Kenya on the global stage, including the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Her skill, leadership, and passion left an indelible mark on Kenyan volleyball, propelling the team to new heights.

“Wanja was not just a great athlete; she was a symbol of strength, hard work, and commitment,” Kenyatta said in his heartfelt condolence message.

He emphasized how her story of perseverance inspired a generation of young players and raised Kenya’s profile in international volleyball.

In her later years, Wanja transitioned from player to mentor, serving as the Malkia Strikers trainer.

Her final assignment at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games underscored her unwavering dedication to the sport, as she helped the team improve upon their Tokyo 2021 performance.

Kenyatta reflected on the impact of Wanja’s passing, calling it a deep loss for both her family and the Kenyan sports community. “Her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled,” he said, adding that Wanja’s legacy will remain a guiding light for athletes and fans alike.

Beyond her technical prowess, Wanja was celebrated for her resilience and optimism in the face of adversity.

As Kenyatta poignantly stated, “Her inspiring life reminds us to always aim for excellence in everything we do.”

Honoring a National Treasure

Janet Wanja’s legacy transcends her accolades. She was a trailblazer who demonstrated the power of sports to unite and inspire.

From her Olympic appearances to her mentorship roles, Wanja embodied the spirit of determination that defines Kenya’s sporting heroes.

As the nation bids farewell to one of its greatest volleyball players, Kenyatta’s words resonate: “Her talent and success brought light and hope to the whole country. May she rest in eternal peace.”

Though her journey has ended, Wanja’s story will continue to inspire future generations to dream big and strive for excellence.
