NAIROBI, Kenya- In a significant leap toward bridging Kenya’s digital divide, Safaricom has reached a major milestone by surpassing the 1,000 sites mark in its 5G network expansion.
The telecom giant now boasts 1,114 5G sites, covering 102 towns across all 47 counties in Kenya.
This aggressive expansion is set to impact the lives of many, with 14pc of the population now within reach of 5G’s high-speed internet, offering faster connections and paving the way for more advanced digital services.
Since launching Kenya’s first 5G network in October 2022, Safaricom has been on a relentless drive to broaden its 5G footprint.
Today, the telco serves over 11,000 enterprise customers with 5G connectivity, enabling businesses to enhance operations and scale rapidly.
The number of active 5G smartphones has surged to over 780,000, underscoring the growing demand for high-speed internet and the potential for innovation in sectors such as IoT, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and digital payments.
For consumers, Safaricom offers tailored 5G data bundles and Wi-Fi packages that deliver blazing-fast speeds.
These can be easily accessed through the MySafaricom App, the Safaricom website, or by dialing USSD codes like *544# for data bundles and *400# for 5G Wi-Fi.
This user-friendly approach ensures that more people and businesses can tap into the benefits of 5G, transforming how they work, communicate, and access information.
While Safaricom’s 5G network is making headlines, it’s part of a larger strategy to connect Kenya. The company’s network already covers 97pc of the population with 2G, 3G, 4G, and now 5G.
Moreover, Safaricom’s Fibre network has passed over 560,000 homes and businesses, providing high-speed internet access that is crucial for everything from streaming to remote work.
Safaricom’s CEO, Peter Ndegwa, emphasized the importance of this digital transformation, stating, “Safaricom remains committed to leading Kenya’s Digital transformation through provision of a worry-free, always-on ubiquitous network enabling access to information, critical services, and communication, therefore bridging the digital divide.”
The CEO also highlighted how 5G will play a pivotal role in driving innovation and fueling Kenya’s digital economy.
By bringing more people online and enabling businesses to innovate, telecommunication companies are helping Kenya leapfrog into a new era of connectivity and digital empowerment.
