NAIROBI, Kenya- In a landmark event for Uganda’s energy sector, the first consignment of directly imported fuel has landed at the new Kipevu Oil Terminal (KOT) in the Port of Mombasa.
Uganda’s Minister for Energy and Mineral Development, Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa, expressed her satisfaction with the high-quality refined petroleum products.
This significant delivery marks a pivotal moment for the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), setting the stage for future growth and cooperation.
“This is a milestone for UNOC,” Dr. Nankabirwa said. “We are grateful to the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC), Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), and the entire Government of Kenya for their unwavering support.”
The operationalization of the new KOT has revolutionized marine oil terminal operations, according to KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto.
The facility’s state-of-the-art infrastructure has enhanced safety, operational excellence, and created synergies that have streamlined processes significantly.
In the fiscal year 2023/2024 alone, KOT managed an impressive 9.6 million metric tons of petroleum products, demonstrating its capacity to handle increased traffic and attract more oil tankers.
Capt. Ruto highlighted the efficiency and effectiveness of the terminal, attributing its success to the advanced systems in place.
UNOC Chairman Mathias Katamba and CEO Proscovia Nabbanja also shared their optimism about the future, envisioning continued growth and cooperation between the two nations.
