Green Park Underpass 90pc Complete with Round-the-Clock Surveillance and Police Station

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has confirmed that construction of the Green Park Terminus Pedestrian Underpass Network at the busy Haile Selassie Avenue–Uhuru Highway junction is now 90pc complete, marking a significant step in efforts to enhance pedestrian safety in Nairobi.

Designed to serve more than 21,000 pedestrians daily, the underpass project is part of the government’s strategy to end longstanding conflicts between vehicles and foot traffic in one of the city’s busiest corridors.

KeNHA stated on Thursday, October 2, that the tunnels would not only provide a safer crossing but also introduce modern conveniences.

Among the key security features is 24-hour surveillance, monitored from KeNHA’s control room. In addition, an on-site police station and holding facility will be set up to guarantee constant security.

“The facility will enhance safety for pedestrians while boosting accessibility and convenience,” KeNHA said in its statement.

The network will include elevators for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), ensuring inclusivity for all commuters.

Modern washrooms, shops, and advertising billboards are also part of the plan, creating both convenience and revenue-generating opportunities.

The Green Park Underpass consists of four tunnels, two running beneath Haile Selassie Avenue and two under Uhuru Highway. Their lengths range from 29 metres to 106 metres, depending on location.

The project, funded through the Road Maintenance Levy Fund at an estimated cost of Sh2 billion, has been described by officials as a transformative urban upgrade.

Community leaders and transport experts have welcomed the development, noting its potential to reduce accidents and improve city mobility. “This is a game-changer for pedestrians in Nairobi. It finally gives people a safe alternative to risky road crossings,” said James Maina, a city planner.

The underpass project comes as the government scales up infrastructure improvements nationwide, including ongoing upgrades at the Kabunde Airstrip in Homa Bay County. Officials say these investments will expand connectivity, reduce accidents, and boost economic growth.

With final touches underway, the Green Park Terminus Pedestrian Underpass is expected to open in the coming months, ushering in a new era of safe, modern, and accessible public infrastructure in Nairobi.
