Kenya Urges Germany to Fast-Track Migration Pact Implementation

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya has called on Germany to accelerate the implementation of a bilateral migration agreement aimed at facilitating structured labour mobility, as the two countries seek to deepen cooperation on immigration, development and global stability.

Speaking after an engagement at Parliament Buildings, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula said Kenya values its long-standing partnership with Germany, which he described as anchored in mutual respect and development cooperation.

The meeting brought together Kenyan legislators and members of the German Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee, led by Derya Türk-Nachbaur.

During the talks, Kenya underscored the critical role of parliaments in shaping forward-looking immigration policies that promote global peace, stability and orderly migration.

Wetangula said Kenya urged Germany to use its influence within the European Union to advance coordinated, humane and sustainable responses to migration challenges facing both Europe and Africa.

A key focus of the discussions was the Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement, which came into effect in September 2024.

Kenya called for its expedited implementation to enable skilled Kenyan workers to access structured labour opportunities in Germany while helping address labour shortages in key sectors of the German economy.

According to the Speaker, strengthened parliamentary diplomacy would further deepen cooperation between the two countries across priority areas including education, technology, agriculture, security and trade.

Kenya and Germany have in recent years expanded collaboration on development financing, skills training and climate action, with migration increasingly emerging as a strategic pillar of bilateral engagement.

The National Assembly said continued dialogue between legislators from both countries would be critical in aligning policy frameworks and ensuring the successful implementation of agreed programmes.
