The announcement was made during a joint press conference held by KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori and TSC CEO Nancy Macharia.
Misori outlined the key outcomes of the discussions, stating, “The collective bargaining agreement has been honored, medical cover has been restored, and regarding teacher promotions, the TSC is actively seeking funds to promote as many teachers as possible. Additionally, discussions are ongoing to confirm teachers in acting positions.”
He assured teachers that those who participated in the industrial action would not face any reprisals.
In her remarks, Macharia highlighted the importance of cooperation between the union and the TSC, emphasizing that the welfare of students is a priority.
“We recognize the dedication of our teachers, and today’s meeting with the unions underscores our commitment to the students, who are more important than all of us,” she said. “We are committed to ensuring that the lost instructional time is recovered.”
The strike was originally called to press for the implementation of the 2021-2025 collective bargaining agreement (CBA). While the government has begun implementing the second phase of the CBA, KUPPET maintains that the salary increments fall short of addressing teachers’ financial needs.
Despite the decision to end the strike, KUPPET acknowledged the progress made, including the government’s pledge to hire Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers and provide adequate compensation for those serving in acting capacities.
However, KUPPET insists that more needs to be done, particularly concerning the promotion of teachers to higher grades.
The union remains vigilant, emphasizing that it will continue to engage with the TSC to ensure all outstanding issues are resolved.
