NAIROBI, Kenya- The family of former Matungu Member of Parliament David Were is mourning after his son was robbed and killed in a brutal night attack in Kisumu County.
Hannington Were, 39, succumbed to stab wounds after he and a friend were attacked by two assailants riding on a motorcycle in the Obunga area during the early hours of Sunday morning.
According to police reports and family accounts, Hannington had left his house shortly after midnight in the company of his friend, Peter Mutua, and the two were walking towards Mamba Hotel along Nyerere Road to buy food when they were ambushed.
Mutua, who survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment, narrated that the attackers suddenly turned towards them on a motorcycle before launching the violent assault.
“They came with the motorbike, they just turned and whisked out something that looked like a piece of metal which they used to hit him. I ran calling for help,” Mutua said.
Former MP David Were said his son sustained stab wounds on the back and severe injuries to the head during the attack.
“He was rushed to hospital around 2:30 and I was told he had stab wounds in his back,” the former legislator said.
Hannington was pronounced dead on arrival at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), while his friend remains hospitalised in critical condition.
The deceased reportedly worked as a compliance officer at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). His father described him as a private and non-controversial person.
“Hannington is a very private person and does not always walk at night. I do not know what prompted him to leave,” David Were said while calling for improved security in Kisumu.
Residents of Kisumu have since expressed growing concern over rising insecurity and violent attacks within the city, with many calling for increased police patrols, especially during the night.
Police officers visited both the crime scene and the hospital and have launched investigations into the fatal attack as detectives pursue the suspects.
