NAIROBI, Kenya- The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a manhunt for suspects linked to the torching of a Mazda CX-5 along Thika Road during violent protests tied to the ongoing fuel crisis and nationwide matatu strike.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the DCI said detectives had obtained and were analysing viral video footage believed to show some of the individuals behind the dramatic incident that unfolded during protests along the busy highway.
“This incident not only endangered lives but also resulted in significant property damage, and investigations remain active,” the DCI said.
The vehicle was set ablaze amid chaotic scenes as protests erupted in several parts of Nairobi and neighbouring towns over soaring fuel prices and the rising cost of living. Protesters barricaded roads using burning tyres and stones, leading to running battles with police and widespread transport disruption.
According to the DCI, investigators are pursuing critical leads aimed at identifying and arresting all those involved in the criminal act.
“Detectives are diligently pursuing crucial leads aimed at identifying and apprehending all those involved in this criminal act,” the agency stated.
The investigative agency appealed to members of the public to assist with information that could help identify suspects captured in the viral footage.
The public has been urged to report information through the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline, by calling the toll-free number 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to restoring law and order, saying individuals exploiting protests to engage in criminal activities would face the full force of the law.
The torching incident occurred as violent protests spread across the country following a nationwide matatu strike triggered by record fuel prices announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
Several businesses were looted, roads blocked and property destroyed during the unrest, which also left multiple people dead and dozens injured.
