EACC Arrests Three Traffic Officers Over Alleged Bribery on Kisumu–Kisii Highway

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested three traffic police officers attached to Sondu Police Station over allegations of soliciting and receiving bribes from motorists along the busy Kisumu–Kisii Highway.

The officers — Inspector of Police Rachel Wangetha, Corporal Wilberforce Koffi and Corporal Shadrack Nerima — were arrested on Thursday following a targeted surveillance operation by EACC investigators.

According to the Commission, the operation was launched after it received multiple complaints from motorists and members of the public accusing traffic officers manning the highway at Sondu of persistent extortion.

EACC said the suspects were caught in the act of soliciting and demanding bribes from road users, allegedly without carrying out vehicle inspections or enforcing traffic regulations.

“Upon arrest, the officers were found in possession of cash in various denominations, suspected to be proceeds of corruption,” the Commission said in a statement.

The suspects were first processed at the EACC Central Nyanza Regional Office in Kisumu before being escorted to Kisumu Railways and Ports Police Station, where they were booked pending further investigations.

The arrests are part of EACC’s ongoing nationwide crackdown on bribery and corruption along major highways, particularly during the festive season when traffic volumes increase.

The Commission said it has intensified intelligence gathering and surveillance targeting essential public services and sectors prone to corruption, with the aim of promoting integrity, transparency and accountability in public service.

EACC urged members of the public to continue reporting incidents of corruption through its official reporting channels as investigations into the matter continue.
