LONDON, UK — Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, the Metropolitan Police has confirmed.
The charges relate to alleged offences involving three women, reportedly committed between 2021 and 2022, during the Ghanaian international’s tenure at the Premier League club.
According to police, two counts of rape involve one woman, three further counts of rape are linked to a second woman, and the sexual assault charge involves a third woman.
Partey, 32, was formally charged following an investigation that began in February 2022, when authorities received the first report of rape.
“Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward,” said Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation.
“We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team,” he added.
The Metropolitan Police has urged those with information to contact detectives via email at CIT@met.police.uk.
Partey, whose contract with Arsenal ended on Monday, is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5.
The Ghanaian midfielder joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in October 2020 in a £45.3 million deal.
He made 130 Premier League appearances under Mikel Arteta, scoring nine goals, and was a key part of the squad that finished second in the 2023/24 season.
He also featured 12 times in Arsenal’s Champions League campaign, which saw the Gunners reach the semi-finals before being knocked out by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.
