NAIROBI, Kenya – The government has unveiled a new Deposit Assistance Initiative aimed at making home ownership more affordable and accessible for low- and middle-income earners across Kenya.
Launched in Nairobi’s South B area, the initiative is part of the broader Affordable Housing Programme and seeks to ease the financial burden of home deposits for aspiring homeowners.
Speaking at the event, Sheila Waweru, the acting CEO of the Affordable Housing Board, said the scheme reduces the required deposit from 10% to 5%, a move expected to unlock more opportunities for Kenyans struggling to raise initial payments.
“This initiative is a game changer. It ensures that more Kenyans—especially those in the low- and middle-income brackets—are not left behind in their dream of owning a decent, safe, and dignified home,” said Waweru.
She was accompanied by Nairobi South Ward MCA Waithera Chege, as they met residents and stakeholders to discuss the impact and prospects of the Mukuru Affordable Housing Project, one of the government’s flagship developments.
So far, the Mukuru project has already delivered 1,080 units, providing shelter to hundreds of families previously living in informal settlements.
Wider Rollout and Public Engagement
Waweru revealed that the Deposit Assistance Initiative will be accompanied by a nationwide sensitization campaign, targeting other parts of Nairobi and counties across the country.
“Our goal is to ensure every Kenyan knows what opportunities exist and how they can benefit from them,” she said.
How to Apply
Citizens interested in the programme are encouraged to register through the official Boma Yangu platform or consult local housing officers for personalized guidance.
The platform allows users to explore available units, monitor progress of ongoing projects, and receive updates on housing opportunities.
The Deposit Assistance Plan comes at a time when the government is intensifying efforts to reduce the housing deficit and improve living conditions in urban centres.
