NAIROBI, Kenya – Irked by a rise in cases of human rights violations, former Chief Justice David Maraga has now demanded a total regime shutdown.
Maraga, who was reacting to the recent death of online influencer and teacher Albert Omondi Ojwang in police custody, appeared not to take it anymore.
“The autopsy report of Albert Omondi Ojwang’ released by the Government Pathologist confirms that the young man was brutalised, strangled, tortured and murdered by the police,” Maraga said in a statement.
How President Ruto’s gov’t has lost its legitimacy
The ex-CJ regretted that the brutal murder falls nearly on the one-year anniversary of the killing, maiming, and abduction of hundreds of young Kenyans.
“Now, this is evidence that William Rutto’s administration does not appreciate that the people of Kenya are sovereign. His administration has therefore lost legitimacy to continue being in power,” the statement from the David Maraga Campaign Headquarters further reads.
Maraga also lamented that police killings and enforced disappearances have increased in what he termed a geometric progression under the ruling Kenya Kwanza regime.
“It is not normal, not acceptable and totally indefensible for enforced disappearance to rise by 450% in one year. We refuse to be a country where parents have their children kidnapped in broad daylight, tortured and killed by State-sponsored terror,” said Maraga.
Why David Maraga feels that enough is enough
Maraga further maintained that Ojwang’s murder is the last straw.
“The Ruto administration has for long now taken Kenyans for granted. This is where, as a country, we must draw the line against impunity and the breakdown of the rule of law. “It’s abundantly clear that this regime will not and cannot govern,” he stated.
Maraga took the opportunity to demand the regime shutdown in efforts to make way for a reset to the rule of law and accountability.
“A restoration of the values respecting human life and a rebuilding of our nation’s institutions that now point towards State failure,” Maraga’s statement concluded.
