NAIROBI, Kenya- Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that two police officers based at Kikuyu Police Station are linked to the separate killings of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu and Dr Victoria Mutiso, claiming the officers are being protected by senior security officials.
Gachagua made the claims while addressing a gathering at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County.
The former Deputy President said he had received the information from what he described as disgruntled police officers.
“I have the names of the two police officers,” he said.
The allegations have not been independently verified.
The killing of lawyer Matthew Kyalo Mbobu occurred on September 9, 2025, after he was shot along Magadi Road in Nairobi.
Mbobu was attacked while driving home from work, with investigators pursuing leads into the shooting.
Police said the lawyer was attacked by two assailants riding a motorcycle, with investigations launched to establish the motive and identify the suspects.
Gachagua questioned why the alleged officers had not been arrested.
“We have come to know it was police officers,” Gachagua said.
“The two police officers are the ones who killed lawyer Kyalo Mbobu and Dr Victoria Mutiso.”
The former Deputy President also accused the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) leadership of failing to act on the information.
“Why are you protecting the two police officers?” he asked.
Gachagua claimed the police service had been affected by internal challenges, including what he termed ethnicisation and low morale among officers.
He further linked the allegations to wider concerns over public safety, warning tourists and investors to exercise caution.
“Police and goons are the same in this country. That is why I said tourists and investors to be careful,” he said.
The DCP leader also accused authorities of covering up criminal cases involving security officers.
“That is what is happening. There is a lot of cover up,” he said.
The allegations come amid public scrutiny over several high-profile criminal investigations involving professionals and public figures.
Dr. Mutiso, a prominent clinical psychologist and Head of Research at the Africa Mental Health Research and Training Foundation (AMHRTF), was shot dead on July 29, 2026, in what investigators described as a targeted attack in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area.
Police said she was travelling to work in a taxi when a Toyota Prado intercepted the vehicle before gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire, fatally wounding her.
The killing came months after Dr. Mutiso had reported a series of incidents linked to a long-running land dispute involving property in Mlolongo, Machakos County.
Court filings and investigators indicate that her home had been the subject of an eviction in February 2026, during which vehicles disappeared from the property.
Detectives are investigating whether one of the missing vehicles, a Toyota Prado, was the same vehicle used to intercept the taxi before the shooting.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since arrested multiple suspects in connection with the murder.
Two initial suspects were taken into custody on July 30, while two additional suspects were arrested days later as detectives expanded the probe.
Investigators have also recovered exhibits for forensic analysis and continue examining whether the killing was connected to the earlier land dispute and reported threats against Dr. Mutiso.
