Three Killed, Several Injured in Mangina Crash on Nairobi–Naivasha Highway

Date:

KIAMBU, Kenya — Three people have been confirmed dead following a grisly road traffic accident at Mangina area along the Nairobi–Naivasha highway in Lari, Kiambu County, in the early hours of Saturday.

Police at the Lari Traffic Base said the fatal crash occurred a few minutes before 1:00 am and involved three vehicles: an ENA Coach bus, a lorry, and a Toyota matatu belonging to Quick Shuttle. The impact of the collision left multiple passengers injured and caused major disruption along the busy highway corridor.

According to preliminary police accounts, the accident happened under unclear circumstances.

Officers said investigations have been launched to establish the exact cause of the multi-vehicle crash, including whether speeding, fatigue, mechanical failure, or poor visibility contributed to the incident.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash.

Several injured passengers were evacuated and rushed to Orthodox Hospital and Kijabe Mission Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Hospital sources indicated that some of the victims sustained serious injuries, though the full extent of their conditions has not yet been officially disclosed.

The wreckage from the bus, lorry, and matatu partially blocked the highway for hours as rescue operations and towing efforts continued.

Motorists were forced to use alternative routes as authorities worked to clear the scene and restore traffic flow.

Police officers from the Lari Traffic Base coordinated the recovery process and documented the scene as part of ongoing investigations.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to the mortuary pending identification and postmortem examinations.

The Nairobi–Naivasha highway has in recent years been the site of frequent road crashes, often involving commercial vehicles and public service vehicles.

Authorities have repeatedly urged drivers to exercise caution, especially during night travel when visibility is low, and fatigue is more likely to set in.
