NAIROBI, Kenya- Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has said he regrets supporting President William Ruto and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the 2022 General Election, marking his strongest criticism yet of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Speaking on Friday while issuing bursary cheques to students in Kiharu Constituency, Nyoro publicly declared that he had parted ways with UDA, saying the government had failed to deliver on the promises it made to Kenyans during the 2022 campaign.

The lawmaker said he was sorry for supporting President Ruto’s presidential bid and asked Kenyans for forgiveness, arguing that the administration had fallen short of expectations.

Nyoro cited the high cost of living, increased taxation, rising public debt, poor service delivery and what he described as the re-launch of projects initiated by previous administrations as evidence that the government had strayed from its campaign agenda.

His remarks represent a significant escalation in his fallout with the ruling party, having previously accused UDA of abandoning its campaign promises on economic management, prudent borrowing and education funding.

Earlier this year, Nyoro said the party had shifted its focus from delivering results to public relations, arguing that Kenya’s economic performance had failed to meet expectations despite promises made during the election campaign.

He also criticised the government’s borrowing levels and handling of dissenting voices.

Once considered one of President Ruto’s closest political allies and among the key architects of the Kenya Kwanza campaign, Nyoro’s relationship with the ruling party deteriorated following political disagreements that culminated in his removal as chairperson of the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee.
