NAIROBI, Kenya- President William Ruto has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, which left 16 students dead and at least 74 others injured, as the nation grapples with shock and grief.
In his message, Ruto extended condolences to bereaved families and the school community, describing the incident as a painful national tragedy.
“Our hearts and prayers are with the families who have lost their beloved daughters in the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil,” he said.
He noted that the loss of young lives with promising futures has left an emotional scar across the country.
“No words can truly ease the pain of losing young lives filled with promise, hope, and dreams for the future,” the President added.
Ruto said the country stands in solidarity with those affected, including parents, guardians, teachers, and fellow students.
“As a nation, we mourn with the parents, guardians, teachers, and fellow students who are enduring this unimaginable tragedy,” he said.
He further stated that government efforts were now focused on emergency response and investigations into the cause of the fire.
“Our immediate attention is focused on the rescue of those affected, the treatment of the injured, and support for their families, while investigations continue into the cause of the fire,” he said.
Ruto concluded his message with prayers for those affected.
“May God grant comfort and strength to the grieving families during this painful time. Poleni sana.”
The president is currently in Nairobi attending the national prayer breakfast at Safari Park.
