KIAMBU, Kenya- Former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday hosted United States Chargé d’Affaires Susan Burns at his Ichaweri home in Gatundu, Kiambu County, in the latest diplomatic engagement between the senior American envoy and Kenya’s political leadership.

Uhuru, who also serves as the Jubilee Party leader, shared photographs of the courtesy call on his social media platforms but did not disclose the agenda of the meeting or provide details of the discussions.

Neither the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi nor the Office of the Former President immediately issued a statement outlining the issues discussed during the visit.

Continued diplomatic engagement

The meeting comes less than two weeks after Burns held separate talks with KANU National Chairman Gideon Moi, reflecting continued diplomatic outreach by the United States to leaders across Kenya’s political landscape.

Following Monday’s meeting, Jubilee Deputy Organising Secretary Pauline Njoroge described the visit as recognition of Uhuru’s continued role in regional diplomacy and peace initiatives.

“The former president remains a respected statesman whose contribution to peace, regional security and various diplomatic efforts continues to be recognised internationally,” she said.

Burns’ active diplomatic schedule

Since assuming office as U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Kenya, Burns has maintained an active schedule of engagements with government officials, opposition leaders, civil society organisations, the private sector and development partners.

On June 24, she met Gideon Moi at the U.S. Ambassador’s residence in Nairobi, where they discussed Kenya’s political and economic landscape, democratic governance, regional stability and bilateral cooperation.

After that meeting, Moi said the discussions focused on strengthening ties between Kenya and the United States.

“Earlier today, I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Susan Burns, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Kenya, for an insightful discussion on a range of issues,” Moi said.

“We exchanged views on Kenya’s current political and economic landscape, democratic governance, regional stability, and cooperation that advance shared values and prosperity for our people.”

According to KANU, the talks also covered economic and infrastructure cooperation, support for democratic institutions, peace initiatives, and collaboration in health and technology.

Beyond political consultations, Burns has participated in engagements supporting the U.S.-Kenya health partnership, cultural exchange programmes with Kenya’s creative industry, and public discussions on media freedom and democratic governance.

Political backdrop

The meeting with Uhuru comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election, with both government and opposition leaders stepping up consultations and alliance-building across the country.

While no official details were released on Monday’s discussions, the courtesy call forms part of ongoing diplomatic engagements between the United States and key Kenyan political stakeholders on issues of mutual interest, including governance, regional stability and bilateral cooperation.
