Utumishi Girls Fire: CCTV Analysis Identifies 7 Students in Deadly Dormitory Blaze

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Fresh details have emerged in the investigation into the deadly fire at Utumishi Girls Academy after forensic analysis of CCTV footage reportedly linked seven students to the suspected arson attack that claimed the lives of 16 learners.

According to investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, enhanced review of surveillance footage captured movements inside the school before the blaze erupted at the Meline Waithera Dormitory in the early hours of May 28.

Detectives say the footage formed part of key evidence that led to the arrest of several students now considered persons of interest in the case.

The fire, one of the deadliest school tragedies in recent years, left 16 students dead and scores injured after flames swept through the dormitory while learners were asleep.

Many survivors reportedly escaped through windows as smoke and flames engulfed the building.

The DCI said a multi-agency team comprising crime scene investigators, forensic imaging experts, intelligence officers and DNA specialists has been analysing CCTV footage, witness statements and physical evidence recovered from the scene.

Authorities are also examining burn patterns, possible ignition sources and the building’s electrical systems to establish exactly how the fire started.

Investigators believe the fire may have been deliberately set, with preliminary findings pointing to a planned arson attack.

Earlier reports indicated that eight students had been arrested in connection with the incident, although investigations remain ongoing and authorities have not disclosed the identities of the suspects due to their age.

The tragedy has also raised serious questions about safety standards at the institution. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba revealed that one of the dormitory exits was locked and the facility was overcrowded, conditions that may have worsened the disaster and hampered escape efforts.

Meanwhile, detectives continue recording statements from students, teachers and school staff as they seek to establish the motive behind the suspected attack.

The DCI has appealed for patience from parents and the public, promising a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances that led to the devastating loss of life.
