Angata Barrikoi Sugarcane Plantation Destroyed in Suspected Arson Attack

Date:

TRANSMARA SOUTH, Kenya – A large sugarcane plantation in Angata Barrikoi, Transmara South Sub-county, was set on fire by unknown individuals, deepening concerns in a region already reeling from violent unrest and land disputes.

The fire, which consumed an undisclosed number of acres, has caused significant losses for local farmers.

While the cause of the fire remains unclear, authorities suspect it may be an act of arson.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive and identify those responsible for the devastating act.

This incident comes just days after five people lost their lives, and several others were injured in a violent confrontation with police over a disputed piece of land.

The clash, which escalated long-standing tensions over land ownership and boundaries, highlights the volatile nature of the region, where such disputes, political rivalries, and economic pressures have led to recurrent violence.

The deadly confrontation occurred on Monday, sparked by a long-standing dispute over land ownership, with local residents protesting a land survey.

In addition to the loss of life, the unrest saw a vehicle belonging to the land officials damaged by the protesting locals.

Community leaders are now urging for immediate dialogue and long-term solutions to address the root causes of the unrest, to prevent further destruction and loss of life.
