NAIROBI, Kenya — Senior Assistant Inspector-General of Police Lazarus Opicho, the commander of the Security of Government Buildings and VIP Protection Unit, has died at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi.
Opicho died on Monday night, September 28, 2026, after an illness, according to colleagues and friends.
His death has triggered tributes from senior officials, including Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja and Chief Justice Martha Koome.
Kanja Mourns Veteran Police Officer
Kanja described Opicho as a dedicated, honest, and exemplary public servant whose contribution to the National Police Service would be deeply missed.
Chief Justice Martha Koome also mourned the veteran officer, highlighting his role in strengthening security within the Judiciary.
Opicho served as the pioneer commandant of the Judiciary Police Unit before taking up his position as commander of the SGB and VIP Protection Unit.
“I have received with profound shock and sadness the news of the passing of SAIG Lazarus Opicho, who, until his demise, served as the Commander of the Security of Government Buildings and VIP Protection Unit,” Koome said.
“On behalf of the Judiciary, and on my own behalf, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the leadership and entire fraternity of the National Police Service, his family, friends and colleagues on this untimely loss,” she added.
Opicho’s career in the police service included leadership roles in security operations and the protection of government institutions and senior officials.
