The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a 24-hour alert warning of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms expected through Wednesday, May 6.
The department said rainfall exceeding 40mm is likely in several regions, including Nairobi, parts of Central Kenya such as Nyeri and Murang’a, the Rift Valley including Nakuru and Kericho, as well as Western Kenya.
Low-lying areas face a heightened risk of flooding, alongside possible travel disruptions.
Within Nairobi, the alert highlighted flood-prone areas such as Mathare, Huruma, South C, and Nairobi West. Other affected regions include the Central Highlands—Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kiambu, and Murang’a—and parts of the North and South Rift Valley.
Residents have been warned to expect intense downpours, flash floods, and strong winds.
The department has advised the public to avoid walking or driving through flowing water, keep away from rivers, and refrain from sheltering under trees during storms.
Authorities cautioned that the weather conditions could lead to traffic delays, flooding in urban low-lying zones, and disruptions to infrastructure, urging the public to monitor local weather updates throughout the day.
