NAIROBI, Kenya– A security guard stationed at the Kenya Power headquarters, Stima Plaza, was fatally shot on Wednesday evening as anti-government protests gripped parts of Nairobi.
According to Kenya Power, Fred Wamale Wanyonyi, an employee of Hatari Security Company, was on duty at the Kolobot Road entrance of Stima Plaza when the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m.
He was shot amid the chaos outside the premises and rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
In a statement, Kenya Power expressed shock over the loss and extended condolences to the family.
“We regret the unfortunate death of Mr. Wamale and are working with the relevant investigative organs to unearth the circumstances under which the incident occurred,” the company said.
The protests, which turned violent in several parts of the country, have sparked widespread concern over police conduct and public safety.
The nationwide protests had been called to commemorate the anniversary of the June 25, 2024 anti-Finance Bill which saw more than 60 people killed by police.
Authorities say investigations are underway to establish the exact chain of events leading to Wamale’s death.
This tragic incident adds to the growing list of casualties linked to police brutality in the wake of demonstrations calling for police reforms.
Today’s chaotic scenes continue to draw sharp criticism from an array of bodies, including the diplomatic community and human right defenders.
