NAIROBI, Kenya- A memorial service for late Ol Kalau MP David Njuguna Kiaraho turned politically charged after Nyandarua Senator John Methu publicly referred to Rigathi Gachagua as the “people’s deputy president.”
The remarks, made in the presence of President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, sparked loud cheers and briefly disrupted the solemn ceremony in Nyandarua.
Moment Methu’s remarks electrified mourners
Methu began by acknowledging President Ruto before shifting focus to Gachagua.
“My party leader, and the people’s deputy president Rigathi Gachagua,” he declared.
The statement triggered applause and chants from a section of the crowd, underlining Gachagua’s strong support base in the region.
The moment instantly shifted the tone of the memorial from solemn to politically charged.
Security standoff adds to mounting tension
Earlier, tension had already gripped the venue after security officers restricted access to the VIP section.
A police officer was heard directing colleagues to allow only Gachagua through, temporarily blocking other leaders.
Methu initially stepped back but later returned after access was granted.
Footage later showed him walking in alongside Gachagua, signaling a resolution to the standoff.

The event drew top leaders, including Moses Wetang’ula and Rebecca Miano.
In the days leading up to the memorial, Gachagua had insisted he would attend, warning against any attempts to block him.
He described Nyandarua as his political base and maintained his presence was non-negotiable
