At least three people have died and four others injured after a vehicle collided with an elephant in Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park, authorities have confirmed.
According to police, the incident occurred on Sunday evening when a vehicle carrying seven officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority struck the animal along a route within the park.
The group was travelling from Arua city to the capital, Kampala, when the collision happened, the Uganda Police Force said in a statement shared on X.
Four other occupants sustained injuries and were initially rushed to a nearby hospital before being transferred to Kampala for further treatment. Authorities did not immediately provide details on the condition of the elephant.
Road accidents remain frequent in Uganda, and officials have also warned of a growing number of wildlife-related incidents as human settlements continue to expand into protected areas.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority urged motorists to exercise caution when driving through conservation zones, noting that animals frequently cross roads within protected parks.
“Motorists travelling through Protected Areas are strongly advised to drive cautiously, as wild animals frequently cross the roads,” the agency said.
