Ahmednasir Abdullahi’s Remarks on Muslims and Ruto Trigger Debate Online

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi has sparked debate on social media after publishing a post widely interpreted as a sarcastic commentary on support for President Ruto and the historical marginalisation of Kenya’s Muslim community.

In a post shared on his official X account on Wednesday, Abdullahi listed a series of socio-economic challenges affecting Muslims and residents of Kenya’s marginalised regions before concluding with an apparent declaration of support for the President.

“Because we are ethic/religious Minority, because we are marginalised, because we are poor, because we are uneducated, because our regions are marginalised, because our regions have poor infrastructure…and because we are MUSLIMS…we are with H.E WILLIAM RUTO 100%.”

Although Abdullahi did not explicitly describe the post as sarcastic, the wording and context were widely interpreted as ironic, suggesting criticism of the circumstances he outlined rather than a literal endorsement of the President.

The post quickly attracted widespread reactions online, with users offering differing interpretations. Some viewed it as criticism of the continued socio-economic challenges facing predominantly Muslim and northern Kenya regions despite political support for successive governments, while others interpreted it as commentary on identity politics and the relationship between marginalised communities and national leadership.

Ahmednasir did not provide any further explanation or clarification on the intended meaning of the post.

The remarks come as President Ruto continues engagements with Muslim leaders, including meetings at State House where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to operationalising the Muslim Endowment Fund (Waqf) and addressing issues affecting the Muslim community.
