VOI, Kenya— Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have intercepted a trailer transporting cannabis worth an estimated Sh24.7 million in Voi, Taita Taveta County, arresting two suspects in one of the latest major anti-narcotics operations.

The operation was carried out by officers from the DCI Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) in Mombasa and Voi, working jointly with officers from Voi Police Station following intelligence reports.

Intelligence-Led Operation

According to the DCI, detectives intercepted a Scania truck towing a trailer within Voi Township after receiving intelligence about the suspected movement of narcotics.

What initially appeared to be a routine cargo inspection turned into a significant drug bust after officers searched the vehicle.

The search led to the recovery of 11 gunny bags containing cannabis weighing a total of 825 kilograms.

Police estimate the seized drugs have a street value of approximately Sh24.7 million.

Two Suspects Arrested

The truck driver, Fredrick Otieno Ogode, and his alleged accomplice, Edwin Ochieng Otieno, were arrested at the scene.

The two suspects were taken into police custody together with the truck, trailer and the recovered narcotics.

According to investigators, the suspects are undergoing processing before being arraigned in court.

The DCI did not immediately disclose the intended destination of the consignment or whether investigators are pursuing additional suspects linked to the shipment.

Crackdown on Drug Trafficking

The seizure is the latest in a series of intelligence-led operations targeting narcotics trafficking along Kenya’s transport corridors.

Authorities have intensified surveillance on major highways and border transit routes as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt organised drug trafficking networks operating within and across the country.

Investigators are expected to continue examining the recovered consignment and the vehicle as they seek to establish the source of the cannabis and identify other individuals who may have been involved in the trafficking operation.

Investigations Continue

The DCI said the recovered cannabis, the trailer and the suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.

The suspects are expected to be presented before court once processing is complete, where they are likely to face charges related to trafficking in narcotic drugs under Kenya’s anti-drug laws.
