Man Arrested in Juja After Police Recover AK-47 Rifle and Ammunition

Date:

KIAMBU, Kenya — Police in Juja Sub-County have arrested a 42-year-old man after officers recovered an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and other suspected criminal items during a patrol operation along Kenyatta Road in Kiambu County.

According to a police occurrence book report under OB No.09/25/05/2026, the suspect was identified as John Muiruri, who was arrested on Sunday afternoon following the interception of a suspicious vehicle near Muigai Inn Police Post.

The report states that three officers attached to Muigai Inn Police Post — Inspector George Jaber, Sergeant Albanas Kiambaa, and Police Constable Daniel Kiara — were conducting routine patrols in the Kenyatta Road area when they spotted a green Nissan X-Trail registration number KDC 630J behaving suspiciously.

The officers impounded the vehicle and escorted both the car and its driver to Muigai Inn Police Post for further inspection.

During a detailed search of the vehicle, officers reportedly recovered an AK-47 rifle hidden beneath the driver’s seat. The firearm was loaded with 11 rounds of ammunition in the magazine, while an additional round was found chambered in the weapon.

Police said the rifle’s body number was not visible.

Officers also recovered three additional rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, pieces of adhesive tape, two knives described in the report as “dagaa knives,” 56 nylon cable ties, sacks, tying ropes, and a bunch of keys.

Investigators are now examining whether the recovered items could be linked to planned criminal activity.

The suspect was later transferred to Juja Police Station, where he remained in custody as detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations launched investigations into the source of the firearm and the suspect’s possible criminal connections.

The vehicle was detained for forensic examination.

The scene was visited by officers from the DCI in Juja, crime scene investigators, and the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Juja Farm Police Station.

Authorities have not yet disclosed whether the suspect holds any firearm licence or whether the recovered rifle has been linked to previous crimes.

Cases involving illegal firearms remain a major security concern in Kenya, with police agencies increasingly warning about the circulation of illicit weapons used in robberies, kidnappings, and organised criminal activities.

Investigations are ongoing.
