KITALE, Kenya — Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo has highlighted the role of the Jitume Youth Digital Empowerment Centre at Kitale National Polytechnic in equipping young people with digital skills and expanding access to opportunities in the global digital economy.
In a statement, Omollo said the centre is a key component of the government’s Digital Superhighway Programme, aimed at bridging the digital divide and preparing youth for technology-driven careers.
The facility was established by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy in partnership with Konza Technopolis and the ICT Authority.
According to Omollo, the centre provides learners with the skills and tools required to participate in online work and the broader digital economy.
Modern Digital Learning Hub
The Jitume Centre is equipped with 100 Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) workstations, high-speed fibre internet, and accessible infrastructure designed to accommodate Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), creating an inclusive environment for digital learning and innovation.
The government says the facility is intended to give young people access to modern technology while enhancing digital literacy and employability.
Training for Global Opportunities
Students using the centre receive training in a range of digital fields, including:
- Data analytics.
- Software development.
- Content creation.
- Other emerging digital skills.
The learners also benefit from mentorship under the Ajira Digital Programme and collaborations with industry partners, enabling them to access online jobs and freelance opportunities on global digital platforms while pursuing their studies.
The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to increase youth employment by preparing young Kenyans for remote work and technology-based careers.
Focus on Cybersecurity
Omollo said the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting the safe operation of digital empowerment centres by promoting cybersecurity awareness and strengthening online safety.
He added that the department is working with relevant government agencies to protect critical digital infrastructure from cyber threats and online crime while ensuring secure digital environments for learners.
