Linda Mwananchi Postpones Kisii, Keroka Rallies

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Linda Mwananchi movement has postponed its planned rallies in Kisii and Keroka, citing the need to join nationwide commemorations for victims of the 2024 Gen Z protests and those who were killed or forcibly disappeared during the demonstrations.

In a statement issued on June 23, 2026, the movement announced that the rallies, which had been scheduled for June 26, will now be held on July 3.

The group said it would instead stand in solidarity with victims of the Gen Z protests and their families during remembrance activities planned across the country.

Linda Mwananchi also expressed concern over what it described as the potential for police and state-sponsored brutality during the commemorations. The movement warned of possible unlawful arrests and urged participants to remain vigilant while taking part in peaceful events.

The organisation called on security agencies to guarantee the safety and protection of all citizens participating in the commemorative activities.

The statement further criticised the government’s handling of compensation for victims and affected families, arguing that financial assistance alone is insufficient without accountability and justice.

According to the movement, concerns remain over the transparency of the compensation process and the exclusion of constitutionally mandated oversight institutions.

“We are deeply disappointed by the government’s decision to offer limited monetary assistance to the victims and their families without ensuring that justice is done and accountability upheld,” the statement said.

The group argued that reconciliation cannot be achieved without accountability for those responsible and firm guarantees against future violations.

Linda Mwananchi also weighed in on recent developments within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), particularly the reported decision by the party’s National Executive Committee to remove Secretary General Edwin Sifuna from office.

The movement described the decision as similar to an earlier attempt made in February, which it termed unprocedural, unfair, and inconsistent with the ODM constitution.

Following consultations with its legal team, Linda Mwananchi announced plans to challenge the decision in court.

“After consultation with our legal teams earlier this morning, it has been decided to once again test the propriety of the purported ouster in the courts because we are convinced it should suffer the same fate as the first one in February,” the statement said.

The announcement sets the stage for a fresh legal battle over the leadership dispute within ODM while adding a political dimension to ongoing national discussions surrounding accountability for victims of the 2024 anti-government protests.
