GILGIL, Kenya — Hundreds of mourners are expected to gather at Gilgil Stadium today for a memorial service honoring the 16 students who lost their lives in the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy, one of the deadliest school disasters in recent years.
The requiem mass will bring together bereaved families, friends, government officials, religious leaders, educators, and members of the public to pay their final respects to the students whose deaths shocked the nation and plunged communities into mourning.
Ahead of the ceremony, 15 hearses were lined up at Naivasha Funeral Home on Friday morning to transport the bodies to the memorial venue. Following the service, the remains will be released to families for burial in different parts of the country.

The memorial comes weeks after the devastating dormitory fire that claimed the lives of 16 students and left dozens of others injured, triggering an outpouring of grief and calls for greater safety in schools.

One of the students was laid to rest in Kwale County on Sunday after her body was released earlier to her family, becoming the first among the victims to be buried.

Earlier this week, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura announced that each bereaved family would receive Sh200,000 in compensation.

In addition, authorities have undertaken to meet all medical expenses for students injured in the fire and currently receiving treatment.
