NAIROBI, Kenya – The dynamic collaboration between Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and the e-commerce sector has emerged as a cornerstone for Kenya’s economic advancement.
This was underscored at a recent forum reviewing the Kenya E-commerce Strategy, initially launched in December 2023.
Kenya’s MSME sector is notably vibrant, with over 7.4 million MSMEs contributing approximately 40 percent of the country’s GDP.
These enterprises, primarily spearheaded by young entrepreneurs, span a wide range of sectors including farming, agribusiness, logistics, general trade, and services.
To bolster the capabilities of these MSMEs, BrighterMonday Kenya introduced the e-Biz Kwa Vijana program in May 2023.
The initiative aimed to train 1,000 MSMEs in e-commerce and digital marketing. By its conclusion in June 2024, the program had surpassed its goals, training over 2,000 beneficiaries and integrating 632 MSMEs into online trading platforms.
Victor Waliaula, a Nairobi-based entrepreneur, experienced a 30 percent revenue boost after participating in the program.
He noted the transformative impact of digital training on his business, which enabled him to effectively create online advertisements and product promotions.
Similarly, Lilian Wairimu from Jegos Enterprises reported a 50 percent increase in sales revenue due to her enhanced online presence.
The e-Biz Kwa Vijana program, funded by USAID through the e-Trade Alliance, also emphasized support for women entrepreneurs and individuals with disabilities.
According to BrighterMonday Kenya CEO Chris Otundo, the program is crucial for bridging the talent gap in Africa and unlocking economic opportunities for young entrepreneurs and MSMEs.
“We recognize and acknowledge the potential of e-commerce to help revolutionize the local entrepreneurial landscape by equipping young people like Victor and Lilian with the necessary knowledge and tools to expand their market opportunities,” said Otundo.
Michael Mandu, Acting Secretary of the State Department for Trade, highlighted that the Kenya National E-commerce Strategy aims to foster an environment where businesses can thrive, entrepreneurs can innovate, and all citizens can engage in the digital economy.
Mandu pointed out Kenya’s steady growth in e-commerce, establishing the nation as a leader in digital trade within Africa and globally, with sector revenues projected to reach $2.928 trillion in 2023.
“A large share of this revenue is attributable to MSMEs and youth-run enterprises that provide jobs and sustainable livelihoods while also nurturing digital talents in the country,” Mandu stated.
He emphasized that the Kenya National E-commerce Strategy is not merely a policy document but a framework designed to cultivate a thriving business ecosystem and foster entrepreneurial innovation.
