PRETORIA, South Africa – Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party has issued a passionate call to stand with the people of Kenya in opposing the Finance Bill, 2024.
This controversial piece of legislation has sparked significant unrest, with many Kenyans taking to the streets in protest.
In a press statement released on June 24, the EFF emphasized its unwavering commitment to economic freedom and the creation of robust social welfare systems.
“We stand in solidarity with the people of Kenya who are bravely protesting against the exploitative legislation that seeks to impose severe tax,” the statement read.
The EFF highlighted that the widespread protests in Kenya are a clear indication of the populace’s rejection of policies that exacerbate their suffering.
“Kenyans are demanding a government that serves their well-being, not one that imposes additional burdens,” the EFF stated, underscoring the legitimacy of the citizens’ grievances.
The party also expressed deep concern over the violent response to peaceful demonstrations.
“The use of tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets against citizens exercising their right to protest is unacceptable,” the EFF declared.
They called for an immediate cessation of police brutality and the release of those arrested during the protests.
Further, the EFF alleged that the Finance Bill is influenced by external forces, a common issue faced by many developing nations.
“The Bill, which aims to collect $2.7 billion in additional taxes, will undoubtedly raise the cost of living and production, further burdening the people of Kenya, who like us are already living under dire economic conditions,” the statement asserted.
