MIAMI, United States — A United States Secret Service officer has been placed on administrative leave after being arrested in Florida over allegations of indecent exposure and lewd conduct at a hotel near Miami International Airport.
Florida authorities identified the suspect as 33-year-old John Andrew Spillman, who was arrested shortly after midnight on Monday by deputies from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office at a DoubleTree hotel in Miami.
According to investigators, the incident occurred after Spillman had completed a security assignment connected to a visit by Donald Trump during the 2026 PGA Cadillac Championship in South Florida.
Authorities said hotel guests reported suspicious and threatening behaviour earlier in the evening, alleging that Spillman followed them through the hotel lobby and into an elevator.
One woman told deputies she became alarmed after noticing she was being followed from the lobby to the sixth floor, prompting the group to retreat to their room out of concern for their safety.
The situation escalated later when guests allegedly observed Spillman engaging in lewd conduct near their hotel room.
Hotel security personnel responded to the sixth floor after receiving complaints and reportedly found Spillman at the end of the hallway with his trousers lowered.
Investigators said security staff witnessed the alleged conduct firsthand before law enforcement officers were called to the scene.
Spillman was off duty at the time of the incident, according to authorities.
In a statement, Secret Service Uniformed Division Chief Richard Macauley confirmed the agency was aware of the arrest and described the allegations as serious and inconsistent with the standards expected of federal officers.
“The alleged conduct is unacceptable and stands in stark contrast to the professionalism and integrity that I demand of our personnel,” Macauley said.
He added that the agency had launched an internal investigation while cooperating with local authorities.
Spillman, who is based in Washington, D.C., but reportedly lists Marble Falls, Texas, as his residence, was booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and appeared in court on Monday.
The court set the bond at $1,000, approximately Sh129,000.
Court records indicate Spillman has since posted bail and is expected to remain out of custody pending further investigations.
The incident has drawn attention because of the Secret Service’s high-profile role in protecting U.S. presidents, former presidents, and senior government officials.
The agency has previously faced scrutiny over misconduct allegations involving personnel assigned to presidential security details, prompting repeated calls for stricter professional accountability standards within the service.
The investigations by both the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office and the Secret Service remain ongoing.
