NAIROBI, Kenya- The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has named Jean Njeri Kamau of Kenya as the new United Nations Resident Coordinator in Guyana.
Kamau’s appointment, approved by the Guyanese government, took effect on September 15, bringing her extensive experience in human rights, governance, and development to the role.
Jean Njeri Kamau comes to the UN Coordinator role with a wealth of expertise spanning over two decades.
Most recently, she served as Kenya’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, where she was instrumental in navigating complex political landscapes.
Her diplomatic journey also includes key assignments in South Africa, Eswatini, Lesotho, and Washington, D.C. Her impressive career is rooted in her advocacy for human rights and development, marking her as a strong voice in global political governance.
Before her illustrious diplomatic career, Kamau made significant contributions to the public sector and civil society. She served as the Country Director for Action Aid International in Kenya and Lesotho, working on various human rights and poverty alleviation initiatives.
Notably, she was the first Executive Director for the Federation of Women Lawyers, Kenya (FIDA-Kenya), where she championed legal aid and women’s rights.
Her hands-on experience in civil society adds a unique dimension to her work at the United Nations, bridging the gap between grassroots activism and international policy.
Kamau’s educational background further solidifies her qualifications for the UN role. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of Nairobi and a master’s degree in Democratic Studies from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.
