NAIROBI, Kenya- Farmers in Trans Nzoia County could soon see their maize yields double, thanks to Yara East Africa’s innovative Fertilizer Solution Program.
Launched five years ago, this initiative by the crop nutrition firm is revolutionizing maize farming by equipping seed growers with the tools and knowledge they need to maximize their output.
Yara East Africa’s Fertilizer Solution Program has been a game-changer for maize farmers across various regions.
The program includes comprehensive training sessions that focus on Yara’s advanced crop nutrition solutions, which are designed to protect and nourish maize seeds from planting all the way to harvest.
By integrating soil testing and analysis into the training, Yara ensures that farmers understand which nutrients are necessary to boost both the quality and quantity of their crops.
William Ngeno, Country Manager for Yara East Africa, emphasized the impact of these solutions, stating, “Our innovative fertilizer solution programs are revolutionizing maize seed farming by protecting and nourishing seeds from planting through to harvest. These solutions not only boost yields but also enhance farmer livelihoods, contributing directly to the nation’s food security.”
The success of Yara’s program is perhaps most evident in Trans Nzoia County, where the company has partnered with key seed merchants and conducted trials at Lulu Farm.
These trials demonstrate how Yara’s solutions can help farmers close the yield gap, potentially doubling their output.
Currently, the average maize seed production per acre in the region stands at 1,000 kgs, despite a potential production of 2,000 kgs per acre.
Ngeno highlighted the success stories from last year’s trials, conducted in collaboration with the research department at Kenya Seed Company and local seed maize growers.
“This year, one of our farmers went beyond the average potential to realize a yield of 2,400kg/acre—a great increase from an average of 1,000kg/acre,” Ngeno added.
Yara East Africa is confident that by adopting Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and utilizing their innovative fertilizer solutions, seed maize growers can significantly boost their productivity.
This not only meets the increasing demand for quality certified seeds but also plays a critical role in advancing Kenya’s national food security agenda.
The program’s success in Trans Nzoia County serves as a blueprint for other regions, demonstrating the potential for increased yields and improved livelihoods across the country.
