Creators Lose Thousands of Followers as Instagram Purges Fake Accounts

Date:

Millions of Instagram users around the world woke up to dramatically lower follower counts this week after the platform launched a massive automated cleanup now widely being referred to online as the “Great Purge of 2026.”

The large-scale sweep, which took place on May 6, 2026, targeted bot networks, spam profiles and long-inactive accounts in what appears to be one of the biggest enforcement actions ever carried out by Instagram and its parent company, Meta.

The cleanup triggered widespread panic and confusion across the platform as celebrities, influencers, brands and ordinary users suddenly began losing followers by the thousands — and in some cases, millions.

Several high-profile celebrity accounts recorded some of the largest reported drops during the purge.

Reality TV mogul and entrepreneur Kylie Jenner reportedly lost nearly 15 million followers following the cleanup.

Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was also among the biggest affected personalities, with estimates suggesting his account lost between 8 and 18 million followers depending on tracking sources.

K-pop group BLACKPINK reportedly saw a decline of nearly 10 million followers across their platform presence.

The sudden drops immediately sparked speculation online, with many users initially believing Instagram was experiencing a technical glitch or outage.

However, social media analysts later linked the declines to a coordinated Meta enforcement effort designed to improve platform authenticity and eliminate what are often referred to as “ghost followers.”

According to reports, the cleanup specifically targeted accounts identified as spam, automated bots, fake engagement profiles and dormant accounts that had remained inactive for extended periods.

Meta has not publicly released exact figures regarding how many accounts were removed during the purge, but digital marketing experts believe the sweep affected millions of profiles globally.

While celebrities experienced the most visible follower losses due to their massive audiences, smaller creators and influencers were also heavily impacted.

Industry estimates suggest many small and mid-sized creators lost between 2% and 5% of their total follower bases during the cleanup.

For years, fake followers and engagement farming have remained major issues across social media platforms, with some users purchasing followers through third-party services to appear more influential online.

Meta has repeatedly stated that platform integrity and authentic interaction remain priorities for Instagram’s long-term growth.

According to company policies, the platform routinely removes accounts that violate community standards, operate through automation or manipulate engagement systems.

The company says such cleanups are necessary to ensure advertisers receive more accurate data about audience reach and interaction.

Over the past few years, Instagram has already introduced several changes aimed at discouraging artificial growth tactics.

The platform has strengthened detection systems for automated behavior, reduced the visibility of reposted content and increasingly relied on AI moderation tools to flag suspicious activity.

The cleanup additionally affected ordinary users, many of whom reported sudden drops in both followers and following counts despite not being public figures.
