DPP Reaffirms Kenya’s Commitment to Global Fight Against Wildlife Crime

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — DPP Renson Ingonga has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation in the fight against wildlife and environmental crimes following high-level talks with officials from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Regional Office for Eastern Africa.

The meeting, convened at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, focused on enhancing prosecution and enforcement mechanisms targeting transnational wildlife crime networks operating across Africa and beyond.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the discussions also reviewed preparations for the upcoming 10th Meeting of the Wildlife Inter-Regional Enforcement (WIRE) Forum, scheduled to take place in Nairobi.

The forum is expected to attract more than 140 prosecutors, investigators, and law enforcement officers from Africa, Europe, and Asia to discuss strategies aimed at strengthening judicial cooperation against wildlife trafficking and related environmental crimes.

Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) is expected to feature prominently during the deliberations as participating countries seek to improve cross-border investigations, extradition processes, and prosecution of transnational criminal syndicates.

Speaking during the engagement, Ingonga said international partnerships remained critical in dismantling sophisticated trafficking networks that exploit weak enforcement systems across borders.

“This engagement demonstrates our shared commitment to protecting wildlife and the environment through stronger legal frameworks, enhanced prosecution capacity, and cross-border cooperation,” Ingonga said.

Officials from the UNODC delegation praised Kenya’s leadership in combating wildlife crime and called for stronger coordination among prosecutors, investigators, and judicial authorities globally.

“Wildlife crime is a transnational challenge that requires collective action among prosecutors, investigators, and judicial authorities across regions. The WIRE Forum provides a critical platform for strengthening those partnerships,” the delegation stated.

Kenya has increasingly positioned itself as a regional leader in wildlife conservation enforcement due to its strategic role as both a biodiversity hotspot and a transit corridor for illegal wildlife products.

Authorities have in recent years intensified operations targeting trafficking syndicates involved in the illegal trade of ivory, rhino horn, pangolin scales, exotic timber, and other protected wildlife products.

The government has also strengthened collaboration between prosecutorial agencies, customs officials, conservation authorities, and international partners to improve conviction rates in wildlife-related cases.

Wildlife trafficking remains one of the world’s most lucrative forms of organized crime, generating billions of dollars annually and threatening endangered species, ecosystems, tourism economies, and regional security.

Kenya’s legal framework against wildlife crime is anchored in the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, alongside international obligations under treaties such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The upcoming WIRE Forum in Nairobi is expected to further reinforce Kenya’s role in shaping regional and global enforcement strategies against environmental crime while deepening judicial cooperation among participating states.
