NAIROBI, Kenya- International Justice Mission Kenya has welcomed the sentencing of a man convicted in the murder of Farida Kadzo Changawa, describing the ruling as a significant step toward justice for victims of violence against women and children.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, IJM Kenya said the court’s decision to sentence the perpetrator to 20 years in prison sends a strong message against gender-based violence and crimes targeting children.
Farida, a survivor of sexual violence, was killed on June 6, 2025, in Kijipwa, Kilifi County, after previously seeking justice and protection through the legal system.
IJM Kenya said it had supported Farida during her defilement case by working closely with authorities to pursue justice and ensure her protection.
“While this sentence is a step toward justice, it cannot restore the life lost. IJM stood with Farida in her pursuit of protection and justice, and her case underscores the urgent need to strengthen survivor protection at every stage,” said Aggrey Juma, Manager for Violence Against Women and Children at IJM Kenya.
The organisation also condemned the recent killing of Baby Keziah in Kilifi County, warning that the continued attacks against women and children highlight deep-rooted safety concerns in the region.
IJM said the two deaths demonstrate the urgent need for stronger interventions to prevent femicide and violence against children, while calling on authorities and communities to enhance protection for vulnerable victims.
The organisation maintained that although the sentencing in Farida’s case marks progress in accountability, more comprehensive efforts are required to ensure long-term safety and justice for survivors across the country.
