THIKA, Kenya- Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata on Sunday made a surprise appearance at the Linda Mwananchi rally in Thika, joining opposition leaders in a development that could reshape political alignments in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kang’ata was received by leaders of the Linda Mwananchi movement, led by Siaya Governor James Orengo and Senator Edwin Sifuna, during the movement’s maiden political tour of the region.
Addressing supporters, the governor called for greater cooperation among opposition groups, saying unity would strengthen efforts to address the country’s challenges.
“I have asked the Linda Mwananchi team to work closely with Rigathi Gachagua because I am interested in a Kenya that creates opportunities for young people through jobs,” Kang’ata said.
His remarks came just hours after Orengo urged supporters and church leaders attending the event to pray for Kang’ata to formally join the Linda Mwananchi movement.
The rally attracted thousands of residents and featured speeches focused on governance, the high cost of living, youth unemployment and the need for political reforms.
Kang’ata’s appearance is likely to spark speculation about his political future, given that he has been viewed as one of the prominent leaders from the Mt Kenya region allied to President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.
The Thika rally marked Linda Mwananchi’s first major political engagement in Mt Kenya and is part of a broader campaign aimed at expanding the movement’s influence beyond its traditional strongholds.
Other leaders present included former Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi.
The event comes amid increasing calls for opposition unity as political formations begin positioning themselves for the 2027 election contest against President William Ruto.
